Lush Lunes: A Three Kings Day Post

Today my family and I continue with the tradition of celebrating el día de los reyes magos, the feast of the epiphany, or as we call it, three kings day.

Today is the last day of holiday celebrations, (the end of the 12 days of Christmas) the last day our tree shines brightly, and the last day we exchange small gifts.

Three Kings Day is a big deal in Puerto Rico and my mom kept the festivities alive in our home.

As children, the night before three kings day my sister, mom and I would put out a basket of "grass" for the camels. Of course it would be plastic green easter grass instead of the real deal. This eventually caused me to interrogate Mamí about camels ingesting plastic, and how the camels could get inside, but a nine-year old can only get so far with these questions.

Mamí eventually explained that there were no real camels and no actual kings coming inside, but it was a tradition. The three kings travelled far and wide to bring baby Jesus frankincense, myrrh and gold. We too would we have gifts the next morning in celebration of His birth. But it was never really about the gifts - not even then. It was always about those moments together. It was our time. No one could take that away from the three of us.

As we got older, we stopped putting out the grass. But we always set aside time to sit together those mornings - every 6th of January - just before breakfast, exchanging gifts, hugging each other, then sitting down to eat together- it was so precious. I felt like we were the only people in the world having a little party. It is a tradition of togetherness that I hold close to my heart.

That is what will make today so Lush for me, my deep thinkers: spending time with the people I love.

So what's your mission? Set aside some quality time today with someone you love. I promise, it will make all the difference in your Monday.

I hope that you enjoy the first LushLunes of 2014!!! And Happy Three Kings Day to those of you that may be celebrating!
